The Rugged Alternative: Manaslu Circuit Trek in October

If you love the idea of clear autumn skies and epic Himalayan views, but the thought of crowded trails and waiting in line at suspension bridges on the Annapurna route makes you break out in a cold sweat, there is an alternative. Meet the Manaslu Circuit Trek.

Often dubbed the "New Annapurna Circuit," this trek takes you around Mount Manaslu—the eighth highest mountain on Earth—and it is everything a wilderness adventure should be. It is wild, remote, culturally raw, and deeply rewarding. And if you tackle it in October, you are choosing the absolute perfect month to conquer its formidable high pass, the Larkya La.

Let's unpack what makes the Manaslu Circuit an incredible, off-the-beaten-path alternative for October trekkers.

The Wild Appeal of Manaslu

For decades, the Manaslu region was completely closed to outsiders. Even today, it is designated as a restricted area by the government of Nepal. This means you cannot just pack a bag and go solo; you are legally required to hike with a registered guide and have at least two people in your trekking group to secure the necessary permits.

Because of these restrictions, Manaslu has preserved an old-world charm that highly commercialized routes have lost. There are no roads slicing through the heart of the trail here. The culture remains untouched, heavily influenced by Tibetan Buddhism due to the region's close proximity to the border.

In October, this region is a paradise. The monsoon rains have thoroughly scrubbed the valleys, revealing cascading waterfalls, raging rivers, and completely clear, unobstructed views of Manaslu’s double-peaked summit.

The Journey: From Sub-Tropical Gorge to High Alpine Pass

The Manaslu Circuit is famous for its extreme geographical diversity. Over the course of roughly 12 to 14 days, you will walk through almost every climate zone the planet has to offer.

You start low, usually around 700 meters at Machha Khola, where the air is thick, humid, and warm. The trail follows the deep, dramatic Budhi Gandaki River gorge. You’ll find yourself walking along paths blasted directly out of vertical cliff faces, crossing long, dramatic suspension bridges hung high over turquoise waters.

As you push higher into villages like Namrung and Lho, the landscape morphs. The jungle disappears, replaced by alpine pine forests. The Hindu culture of the lower valleys shifts seamlessly into ancient Tibetan-Buddhist country. You will walk past beautifully carved mani walls (prayer stones), spinning prayer wheels, and monasteries framed by massive snowy peaks.

By the time you reach Samagaun (3,530 meters), you are in a different world entirely. The air is thin, trees are gone, and you are surrounded by stark, barren, awe-inspiring glacial landscapes.

The Ultimate Challenge: Conquering the Larkya La

The undisputed climax of the Manaslu Circuit is crossing the Larkya La Pass, which sits at a dizzying 5,160 meters.

October is the prime time to cross this pass. In the winter, it is heavily blocked by snow; in the spring, it can be a slushy, windy mess. But October provides a highly stable weather window with firm trails and minimal risk of dangerous snowfall.

Make no mistake: Pass Day is brutal but unforgettable. You will wake up at 3:00 AM at Dharmasala (the high camp at 4,460 meters) in pitch-black darkness and freezing cold. With your headlamp lighting up the frosty breath in front of you, you will slowly switchback up the moraine.

The climb is a slow, grueling test of mental fortitude. But when you finally reach the top of the pass, adorned with thousands of colorful Buddhist prayer flags fluttering wildly in the wind, the reward is unmatched. You look down on a mind-boggling view of Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru, and the massive Annapurna II. The sense of personal achievement you feel standing up there is something text simply cannot describe.

Accommodation and Vibe: Rustic and Real

While the Annapurna region has highly developed teahouses with extensive menus (offering everything from pizza to apple pie), Manaslu is distinctly more rustic.

The teahouses here are simpler, family-run establishments. In October, they are definitely busy, but they rarely suffer from the sheer, overwhelming chaos of the ABC trail. The food is simple, hearty, and energy-dense—expect plenty of fresh Dal Bhat, Tibetan bread, garlic soup (excellent for altitude acclimatization), and potatoes.

Because it is a restricted area, you get a much stronger sense of camaraderie with your fellow hikers. You will likely see the same handful of groups at each teahouse every night, creating a wonderfully tight-knit, authentic community feel along the trail.

Crucial Packing & Prep Tips for October

Packing for Manaslu in October requires preparation for two completely different worlds: hot, humid lowlands and freezing, high-altitude passes.

·         The Layering Strategy: You need a strict three-layer system. Moisture-wicking merino wool base layers to keep sweat off your skin, an insulating mid-layer (fleece or down jacket) for cold evenings, and a windproof/waterproof outer shell.

·         Footwear and Microspikes: Your hiking boots must be well broken-in before you set foot in Nepal. Blisters on a 12-day remote circuit can completely ruin your trip. Also, carry a pair of lightweight microspikes in your pack. While October trails are generally dry, the early morning ascent up the Larkya La can feature patches of slick, hard-packed ice.

·         Power and Batteries: Remote teahouses rely heavily on solar power. On cloudy days, or at high camps like Dharmasala, charging your electronics can be incredibly difficult or expensive. Bring a heavy-duty power bank (at least 20,000mAh) and keep your phone and camera batteries inside your sleeping bag at night. The alpine cold drains lithium batteries in a matter of hours if left exposed.

·         Water Purification: Do not buy plastic water bottles on the trail—it creates an environmental nightmare in remote regions. Bring two 1-liter durable water bottles or a hydration bladder, and use water purification tablets or a high-quality filter pump for all tap water.

If you have a solid level of physical fitness, a taste for authentic culture, and a desire to see the Himalayas in their rawest form without the commercial circus, the Manaslu Circuit in October is arguably the finest trekking experience Nepal has to offer.

There is a precise moment in early October when the sky over the Himalayas shifts. The heavy, moisture-laden clouds of the summer monsoon break apart, chased away by high-altitude winds. What remains is an atmosphere so crisp and transparent it feels almost surreal. The air loses its humid weight, the dust is entirely washed from the leaves, and the great white walls of the world’s highest peaks emerge in absolute, unblemished clarity.
