What to Do in Samagaon: Ultimate Manaslu Rest Day Guide

Samagaon Village (3530 m) is the most important milestone of the Manaslu Circuit Trek in Nepal. It is the place where your body adapts to the demands of higher elevation places. Trekkers must undergo Samagaon Acclimatizatin before pushing to Samdo and Dharmasala before crossing Larke La Pass. Today’s blog is about what to do in Samagaon Acclimatization Guide which is the ultimate Manaslu Rest Day Guide. Furthermore, we will also talk about proper acclimatization technique.

The golden rule of acclimatization is the trekking mantra: “climb high, sleep low” and it serves well to tackle thin air. The blog will also feature the proper comparison between various side hikes from the village.

Why Samagaon Acclimatization Matters?

The journey of the Manaslu Circuit Trek in Nepal is one of the challenging high – altitude treks in Nepal. Therefore, you must be careful about the possible risks. The places above 3500 m from sea level are vulnerable to altitude sickness. Therefore, acclimatization in Samagaon Village which is located at an altitude of3530 m is crucial. Sitting in the tea house all day for rest will hinders the acclimatization process. Active recovery is the secret to a successful trek.

As mentioned above, we must climb and sleep low. Therefore, Manaslu Base Camp (4800 m) hike is an ideal acclimatization activity to do from Samagaon. It improves the chances of trek completion safely and soundly.

Side Hike Options

There are three places where you can hike to from Samagaon. The most popular one and commonly done is the Manaslu Base Camp Hike but some may prefer lighter hike than a challenging uphill hike. Let’s discuss about these three side hike options.

Side Hike Option A: Birendra Lake (The Scenic & Moderate Route)

  • Quick Stats Box:
    • Altitude: ~3,620 meters
    • Time Required: 1.5 to 2.5 hours round trip
    • Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

The lake is turquoise and emerald color and it is also the glacial lake that is located at the foot of Manaslu Glacier. Furthermore, it is also formed by the seepage from nearby mountains. The trail to the Birendra Lake is relatively gentle and it is perfect for trekkers who want to save their knees and stamina to cross Larke La Pass later on.

Make sure to hike to the lake early in the morning when the water is calmest. It is also to capture the perfect mirror reflection of Mt. Manaslu (8163 m). If you are looking for best photography moment, then the morning time is the best.

Side Hike Option B: Manaslu Base Camp (The Challenging Ultimate Goal)

  • Quick Stats Box:
    • Altitude: ~4,400 to 4,800 meters (depending on how far up the moraine you go)
    • Time Required: 5 to 7 hours round trip
    • Difficulty: Strenuous / Demanding

Please note that the Manaslu Base Camp Hike is not easy like hike to Birendra Lake. The trail is steep and you have to do relentless uphill climb all the way to the top. It will definitely test your lungs and endurance. Even if the trail is hard to climb, the reward is splendid. You will get the best up-close views of the glacier, icefalls, and the gigantic peak of Mount Manaslu itself.

The safety advice this blogger gives you is that you carry snacks, trekking poles, and plenty of water during the Manaslu Base Camp Hike. It is wilderness area without eateries and human settlements. Trekking uphill is hard but descending is not easy either. Therefore, use trekking poles for the steep descent back to Samagaon village.

Side Hike Option C: Pungyen Gompa (The Cultural Alternative)

  • Quick Stats Box:
    • Altitude: ~3,870 meters
    • Time Required: 5 to 6 hours round trip
    • Difficulty: Moderate to Strenuous

The monastery is the hidden gem that people often ignore. It leads to an ancient Buddhist monastery hidden in a high valley beneath the east face of Manaslu. The trip to Pungyen Gompa can be done when you travel from Shyala village to Samagaon with side hike. Yes, it is possible to go to the monastery even before reaching Samagaon.

The scenery of mountains like Himalchuli and Manaslu Peaks from the monastery area looks spectacular. This side trek will surely give you both Himalayan wilderness adventures and cultural wonders.

Village Highlights: What to do in Samagaon Proper

If you come back to Samagaon Village from acclimatization, you can still visit various places around the village or do activities around the village. You can visit Ribung Gompa monastery. The place is also historical and it is within the village where you can observe local ancient traditional Tibetan culture and prayer wheels. Similarly, you can observe the local lifestyle of people. Check their stone houses, grazing yaks and locals spinning wool. Visit the local school and you can interact with the small children. If not, you can simply rest around the dining hall of the tea house and drink lots of water.

When you are visiting the monasteries or buying snacks at the local shops in Samagaon, remember that cards are not accepted. You need cash for this. Make sure to read our comprehensive guide on “how much cash to carry on the Manaslu Circuit Trek” before leaving Kathmandu.
