Frequently Asked Questions

General & Essential Info

The EBC Trek with Lobuche Peak Climbing is considered a challenging adventure. The trek to Everest Base Camp involves long days of hiking at high altitude, while the Lobuche Peak ascent requires basic mountaineering skills, including the use of crampons, harnesses, fixed ropes, and ice axes. Good physical fitness and determination are essential for a safe and enjoyable experience

Most itineraries last between 17 and 20 days, depending on acclimatization schedules, weather conditions, and the chosen route. The itinerary includes trekking to Everest Base Camp, a hike to Kala Patthar, climbing preparation, the Lobuche Peak summit attempt, and the return journey to Kathmandu.

Yes, Lobuche East can be climbed by fit beginners, although previous trekking experience at high altitude is strongly recommended. Basic climbing instruction is usually provided before the summit attempt, allowing first-time climbers to learn essential mountaineering techniques under professional guidance.

The highest point of the expedition is the summit of Lobuche East at 6,119 meters (20,075 feet). Before the climb, trekkers also visit Kala Patthar (5,545 m) and Everest Base Camp (5,364 m), making proper acclimatization an important part of the itinerary.

Preparation & Equipment

Participants should have excellent cardiovascular fitness and be capable of hiking for 6–8 hours daily over rugged mountain terrain. Regular hiking, stair climbing, endurance training, and strength exercises for at least two to three months before the trip are highly recommended.

Lobuche East (6,119 m) is a designated trekking peak that is commonly climbed with standard climbing equipment and permits. Lobuche West (6,145 m) is considered a more technical expedition peak requiring advanced mountaineering skills, specialized permits, and greater climbing experience.

As the trek reaches elevations above 5,000 meters, there is a risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Symptoms may include headache, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. Proper acclimatization, slow ascent, adequate hydration, and following your guide's advice significantly reduce the risk. If symptoms worsen, descending to a lower altitude is the safest treatment.

There is no strict age limit, but participants should be in good physical health and capable of completing strenuous multi-day trekking and climbing activities. Most climbers are between 18 and 65 years old, although younger and older participants may join if they are medically fit.

Begin training at least 8–12 weeks before departure. Focus on cardiovascular fitness, leg strength, endurance, and hiking with a loaded backpack. If possible, gain experience trekking at higher elevations to help your body adapt to thinner air.

Essential items include waterproof trekking boots, thermal base layers, insulated jackets, waterproof outerwear, gloves, hats, sunglasses, trekking poles, and a warm sleeping bag rated for temperatures around -15°C to -20°C. A detailed packing list is usually provided after booking

You'll need crampons, an ice axe, climbing harness, helmet, ascender, carabiners, climbing boots, and safety ropes. Most trekking companies provide group climbing equipment, while personal gear can often be rented in Kathmandu.

Accommodation & Meals

Accommodation is primarily in traditional Himalayan teahouses with basic twin-sharing rooms. During the summit phase, climbers usually stay in tents at Lobuche High Camp, depending on the itinerary. Most itineraries include an overnight stay at Lobuche High Camp, where climbers rest, receive final safety briefings, and prepare for the early morning summit attempt.

Hot showers are available in many teahouses for an additional charge. Availability becomes more limited as you gain altitude, and weather conditions may affect water supply.

Yes. Most teahouses offer charging facilities for a small fee. Carrying a power bank or solar charger is recommended, as electricity may be limited at higher elevations. Wi-Fi is available in many villages, including Namche Bazaar and Dingboche, usually for an additional fee. Internet speed and reliability decrease significantly as you ascend.

Weather & Seasons

The best seasons are March to May and September to November, when weather conditions are generally stable, visibility is excellent, and climbing routes are in their best condition.

Daytime temperatures may range between 5°C and 15°C at lower elevations, while nighttime temperatures at higher camps can drop to -15°C to -20°C or lower during the summit period. Yes. Snow and ice are common on the upper sections of Lobuche Peak, particularly during the summit ascent, making technical climbing equipment essential.

Yes. Weather-related delays and cancellations are common because Lukla Airport is located in a mountainous region with rapidly changing weather. Adding buffer days to your travel plans is strongly recommended. Winter climbs are possible but are recommended only for experienced climbers due to colder temperatures, increased snowfall, and more demanding climbing conditions.

Guides, Support & Safety

Yes. Licensed trekking guides accompany the trek, while certified climbing guides lead the summit attempt and provide technical support throughout the climb. Yes. Before the summit attempt, guides conduct a climbing training session covering the proper use of crampons, ice axes, harnesses, ascenders, fixed ropes, and basic climbing techniques.

Yes. Most packages include experienced porters who carry the majority of your luggage, allowing you to trek comfortably with only a daypack. Your guide will monitor your condition and recommend rest or descent if symptoms develop. In severe cases, emergency helicopter evacuation may be arranged if covered by your travel insurance.

Many expedition operators carry emergency oxygen and first aid equipment for emergencies. However, oxygen should not be considered a substitute for proper acclimatization. If a medical emergency occurs and weather conditions permit, your guide will coordinate a helicopter evacuation through your insurance provider. Comprehensive insurance covering high-altitude rescue is therefore essential.

Permits, Costs & Booking

The expedition typically requires a Lobuche Peak Climbing Permit, a Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit, and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit.
