The Summit Day of Larke La Pass Crossing Timeline

1. The 3:30 AM Wake-Up Call:Dharamsala (4,460m).

You’ll wake up in the freezing cold of Dharamsala (also known as Larkya Phedi). Forcing down a hot breakfast of porridge or eggs at 4:00 AM is tough but non-negotiable—your body needs fuel for the freezing hours ahead.

2. The Frozen Ascent:4:30 AM – 8:30 AM.

Stepping out into the pitch black with your headlamp on, you'll cross the lateral moraine of the Larkya Glacier. The air is incredibly thin and temperatures regularly drop between -10°C and -20°C. Walk in a slow, rhythmic, syncopated pace. Do not rush.

3. The False Summits & The Tea Shop:8:30 AM – 9:30 AM.

The trail weaves past frozen glacial lakes and rolls over a series of deceptive ridges (false summits). Thankfully, a tiny, seasonal stone tea shop operates just below the pass. A cup of hot black tea here will taste like absolute luxury.

4. The Summit:9:30 AM – 10:30 AM (5,106m).

You'll know you’re there when the fluttering Tibetan prayer flags come into view. Standing at 5,106 meters, the raw 360-degree theater of the Himalayas opens up, showcasing Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, and Kang Guru.

5. The Knee-Buckling Descent:10:30 AM – 2:30 PM.

The hardest part isn’t going up; it’s going down. You will drop more than 1,500 meters down a steep, loose scree slope (and often snow/ice) alongside the iconic drop-off. Trekking poles and microspikes are life-savers here.

3 Insider Tips for a Successful Crossing

1. Pack Microspikes: Depending on the season (especially in Spring or after a late Autumn storm), the descent can be a sheet of pure ice. Cheap microspikes bought in Kathmandu will save you from a dangerous slip.

2. The Wind Factor: The pass acts like a giant wind funnel. Clouds and ferocious winds almost always roll in by 11:00 AM. This is why guides insist on starting before dawn—you want to be descending before the weather turns nasty.

3. Keep Water from Freezing: If you use a hydration bladder (like a CamelBak), the water in the exposed tube will freeze solid within 30 minutes. Use insulated Nalgene bottles instead, and store them upside down in your pack (water freezes from the top down).

The feeling of stepping into the wide, grassy meadows of Bimthang around mid-afternoon, looking back up at the massive wall of mountains you just crossed, is a feeling that text simply cannot capture. Your legs will be completely spent, but the sense of achievement is unmatched.
